I Quit Social Media 6 Months Ago: Here's What Happened to My Business
Proof you can grow a business without social media: what happened to my revenue, traffic, and mental health 6 months after I quit.
If you've been here a minute, you probably already know I quit social media in 2026. Like... everywhere. Business, personal, everywhere!
At the start of the year I was 18 months into a business coaching program that focused almost exclusively on social media as THE lead gen channel - the only one that mattered. So I went all in. Posting 5x a week, stories every single day, I even started dabbling in ads. And I hated it. Every part of it.
If you're a service pro who's ever wondered whether you can actually grow a business without social media, I'm living proof you can. I quit completely - deleted the app, stopped posting, put zero effort into it for a full six months. And my revenue from client bookings went up 63% in that time.
Here's the whole story - why I quit, why so many other businesses are doing the same, what I did instead, and what actually happened to my numbers.
Why I Quit Social Media (And Why So Many Business Owners Feel the Same Way)
I kept saying, "if I didn't have to do social media for work I wouldn't have it at all." Like, not even my personal accounts. "I need it for work" kept me stuck doing this thing I genuinely hated... until one day I had this aha moment and thought, waitβ¦
What if I actually don't need this for work?
Turns outβ¦
I work for myself. π‘
Which means I get to make up the rules. Which means if I want to stop doing social media⦠I can stop doing social media.
So, I did.
It's not that it wasn't working for me. I got sales from it. I got clients from it. Just not enough to make it worth the drain on my mental health, time, and energy.
And the majority of my actual traffic was from Google and Pinterest anyway. My clients came from opening my emails for months before they ever booked. Meanwhile I was spending hours every week planning content, scheduling posts, running ads, selling in the DMs... for a channel that wasn't even where my business lived.
If any of that sounds familiar - if you've stayed on social media mostly because you feel like you have to, not because it's actually driving your bookings - that's worth sitting with before you sink another year into it.
So I made the very scary decision to stop.
Why Are Businesses Leaving Social Media in 2026? (The Data)
What I find interesting is⦠I'm not the only one making this call. Organic reach - how many of your followers actually see your posts without you paying for ads - has been shrinking for years. Instagram's average reach rate has dropped 12% year-over-year, with typical posts now reaching only 3-4% of followers, according to Sprout Social's 2026 organic reach report.
That's not a glitch. It's the platforms prioritizing paid ads and personal content over branded posts, which means the businesses posting consistently are competing for a shrinking slice of attention. Likes and reach were never the goal anyway - bookings were. And those two things have stopped correlating.
It's not just business owners feeling this. Gen Z is stepping back too. According to a February 2026 CNBC report, many young people are leaving mainstream platforms or shifting to "posting zero" (lurking without sharing), because social platforms feel draining, overly commercialized, and hard on their mental health, and they're looking for something that feels more real.
When the platforms are optimizing for their ad revenue instead of your reach, and even the audience is starting to check out - that's your sign the math has changed.
Alternatives to Social Media Marketing: What I Did Instead
I'm not the first person to build a business on channels other than Instagram - I just finally let myself actually do it. Here's where my energy went instead:
SEO & Blogging
I went back to the marketing I actually love - reviving the blog, setting up my SEO properly, and targeting what my ideal clients were actually searching for instead of what an algorithm wanted to feed them.
My web designer friend told me to check out Kate Kordsmeier, who runs a thriving coaching business with zero social media and now teaches other women entrepreneurs how to do the same. I finished her course on blogging for SEO and I'm now recommending it to all of my SEO clients.
I stopped thinking of Pinterest as "another social platform to manage" and started treating it like what it actually is: a visual search engine, not a social one. It doesn't ask you to show up daily, perform, or go viral - it just needs to be maintained consistently and left to compound.
Email Marketing
Email doesn't send me traffic - it's not a discovery channel. But it is where leads actually turn into clients. Someone finds me through SEO or Pinterest, opts in to my list, and then gets nurtured through email until they're ready to book. Sometimes my clients open my emails for months before they ever inquire- and thatβs ok! That's the channel doing the real conversion work - not the top-of-funnel scroll.
Do You Need a Website in 2026? Why They're Not Dead
Yes - and honestly, more than ever. A website is the one piece of your online presence you actually own. Social platforms can change their algorithm, shrink your reach, or disappear overnight. Your domain is yours.
People use social media for quick entertainment. They come to a website when they're actually ready to trust a business and buy. That distinction matters more than most wellness practitioners give it credit for.
It matters for AI search too. A recent analysis of AI citation data found that 86% of the sources AI answer engines pull from are brand-managed - mostly first-party websites - not social profiles. If your business only lives on Instagram, AI tools recommending businesses in your space have nothing structured to pull from.
And your website works while you're not - capturing leads, answering questions, and booking clients even when you're offline, on a walk, sleeping, or even on vacation. That's not something Instagram never did for me.
How I Grew My Business Without Social Media (My 6-Month Results)
1. Revenue.
My revenue from client bookings increased by 63% over the last 6 months. And that's from doing less, not more. Turns out I was pulling all the wrong levers and just didn't know it yet.
2. I'm back to the marketing I actually love.
SEO, Pinterest, reviving my blog, building out new email funnels - the stuff that genuinely lights me up instead of the stuff that used to make me open my laptop at 9pm with a pit in my stomach.
3. New business growth inspo.
I quit the business coaching program. It wasn't bad - it just wasn't serving me anymore, and I finally let myself admit that. Now, I follow other successful women business owners who are growing their businesses without social media too (yes! they really do exist.)
4. My mental health.
I didn't realize how much anxiety and even low moments social media was creating for me until it was gone. My mental health, peace, and happiness have been so much better since I've been off the apps - and I really don't miss it at all.
Your Permission Slip
I'm not here to tell you to get off social media. But if you share similar feelings, just know it's genuinely possible to build a business without it.
What I do want you to sit with this week is this: is there something in your business that's draining you and doesn't feel good anymore? Do you actually need to be the one doing it? Do you need it at all? Or is it time to hand it off to someone else?
You get to choose where your energy goes. You're also the boss, and you get to make the calls, k?
FAQs: Quitting Social Media for Business
Q: Can you grow a business without social media?
A: Yes. SEO, content marketing, Pinterest, email marketing, referrals, and ads can all drive traffic and bookings without a social presence. Many wellness practitioners see stronger, more consistent results from these channels than they ever did from posting daily.
Q: How do you market a business without social media?
A: Focus on channels you own: an SEO-optimized website and blog, Pinterest (a visual search engine, not a social platform), and email marketing to nurture leads until they're ready to book. These channels compound over time instead of resetting every 24 hours.
Q: Is a website still worth it in 2026?
A: Yes. A website is the one piece of your online presence you actually own, it's where people go when they're ready to trust and buy (not just scroll), and it's the structured source AI search tools pull from when recommending businesses.
Q: Why are businesses leaving social media?
A: Organic reach has declined sharply across platforms as algorithms prioritize paid ads and personal content over branded posts. Combined with burnout from constant posting and a shift toward channels people actually own, many business owners are moving their energy elsewhere.
The Bottom Line
Quitting social media didn't shrink my business - it grew it, because the effort finally moved to channels that actually convert. You don't need my permission to make the same call in your own business.
